Miami tap water is legal to drink, and for most daily uses it meets federal standards. But “legal” and “as clean as it could be” aren’t the same thing. The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department’s own 2024 Consumer Confidence Report shows PFAS levels above the EPA’s enforceable limit, and the water’s extreme hardness creates real consequences for home plumbing and appliances. For many households, water filtration isn’t about taste preference anymore.

Especially common are questions from families with young children or homeowners dealing with scale buildup they can’t explain. Here’s what the data actually says and what it means for your home.

Where Miami’s Water Comes From & How It Gets to Your Tap

Miami’s drinking water originates from the Biscayne Aquifer, a shallow limestone groundwater formation beneath Miami-Dade County. Because it sits close to the surface, it’s more vulnerable to contamination from land use, runoff, and industrial activity than deeper aquifer systems. The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department operates three major treatment plants and delivers roughly 300 million gallons daily to approximately 2.8 million people, performing more than 150,000 water sample tests annually across treatment plants, the distribution system, and customer taps. What comes out of those plants is treated thoroughly. The question is what’s in the source water before treatment and what treatment can’t fully remove.

One detail worth understanding: Miami-Dade uses chloramine as its primary disinfectant, not plain chlorine. Chloramine combines chlorine and ammonia into a more stable disinfectant that holds up across the distribution system. Unlike chlorine, it doesn’t dissipate if you let water sit overnight, and it requires specific filter media for effective removal. A basic carbon block filter handles chlorine taste well but doesn’t address chloramine the same way.

What’s Actually in Miami Tap Water Right Now

The most significant finding in WASD’s 2024 Water Quality Report involves PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). These synthetic chemicals persist in the environment and accumulate in the body over time. WASD’s report recorded PFOS at 18.98 parts per trillion and PFOA at 7.2 parts per trillion in distribution water. The EPA established an enforceable maximum contaminant level of 4 ppt for both in April 2024. Both readings exceed that limit. WASD has until 2031 to achieve compliance, and a capital improvement program is underway. That timeline means Miami households are drinking water above the federal PFAS standard for at least several more years.

Miami water is also exceptionally hard. At 383 parts per million, among the highest of any major U.S. city, dissolved calcium and magnesium leaching from the limestone aquifer leave scale deposits inside pipes, water heaters, and appliances. Over time, that buildup reduces efficiency, shortens equipment life, and can restrict flow in narrow supply lines. It’s a plumbing problem as much as a water quality problem.

Other detected substances include trihalomethanes (disinfection byproducts formed when disinfectants react with naturally occurring organic matter during treatment), trace arsenic, and lead that can enter water from older fixtures and pipes inside the home. These remain within current EPA legal limits, though the EPA and CDC recommend lower thresholds, particularly for lead.

Who Should Be Most Concerned

For healthy adults, Miami tap water poses no immediate risk. The picture changes for certain groups.

Pregnant women, infants, young children, and immunocompromised individuals face elevated risk from PFAS at levels that are legally permitted but above what the EPA’s health-based thresholds consider safe for long-term consumption. The same groups are more sensitive to lead, even at concentrations within legal limits. If you have an infant drinking formula mixed with tap water, or a household member with a compromised immune system, that context shifts how you weigh the risk.

Residents in older homes face an additional lead concern. Lead doesn’t typically come from the water utility. It leaches from older pipes, solder joints, and fixtures inside the home. The water leaving the treatment plant can be compliant while the water at your kitchen tap carries lead picked up along the way. Homes built before 1986 are worth paying attention to on this point.

One more recent change: Miami-Dade discontinued fluoridation following Florida Senate Bill 700, signed May 15, 2025, which prohibits local governments from adding fluoride to public drinking water. Families with young children should speak with a dentist about whether fluoride supplementation makes sense going forward.

Why a Pitcher or Faucet Filter Probably Isn’t Enough

Standard carbon filters, including most pitcher and faucet-mounted units, improve the taste and odor of chloramine-treated water. That’s a real benefit. But carbon filtration alone doesn’t remove PFAS, dissolved heavy metals, or the mineral load behind Miami’s 383 ppm hardness.

The EPA identifies reverse osmosis as the recommended technology for PFAS removal at the point of use. Systems certified to NSF/ANSI 58 have been independently tested and verified to reduce PFAS compounds. Filters certified only to NSF/ANSI 42, which covers taste and odor, don’t carry PFAS certification. NSF/ANSI 53 filters can include a PFAS reduction claim, but only when specific compounds are explicitly listed in the product’s certification. The standard number alone isn’t enough. Always verify that your filter’s certification lists PFAS compounds by name before relying on it for PFAS reduction.

Miami’s hardness adds another layer of complexity. At 383 ppm, the mineral content can shorten the lifespan of a reverse osmosis membrane and reduce system performance if it’s not correctly sized and maintained. A filter that performs well in a city with moderate hardness may underperform here without accounting for local water chemistry.

When Reverse Osmosis Makes Sense & What It Involves

An under-sink reverse osmosis system uses a semipermeable membrane to remove PFAS, disinfection byproducts, lead, arsenic, and dissolved solids before water reaches your drinking faucet. It’s a point-of-use solution, meaning it treats water at one tap. A whole-home filtration system works at the point of entry, treating all water coming into the house and protecting pipes and appliances from hard water scale in addition to addressing drinking water quality.

Installation isn’t complicated, but it’s not as simple as attaching a unit to a faucet head. An under-sink reverse osmosis system requires a connection to the cold water supply line, a dedicated drinking faucet through the countertop or sink deck, and a drain connection for the reject water the membrane produces. Water pressure should be evaluated before installation, since reverse osmosis membranes require adequate pressure to function correctly. Older supply lines or shutoff valves under the sink sometimes need replacement at the same time.

In coastal South Florida, salt air, high humidity, and mineral-heavy source water accelerate wear on plumbing components and filtration membranes. Periodic membrane replacement and system inspection matter more here than in regions with softer water. Working with a local licensed plumber rather than a self-install kit means system sizing, pressure assessment, proper integration with existing plumbing, and scheduled maintenance are handled as part of the service, not left to the homeowner to sort out later.

The Honest Verdict on Miami Tap Water

WASD operates a large, actively monitored system, and the overwhelming majority of what it measures meets federal standards. But confirmed PFAS exceedances above the EPA’s enforceable limit, extreme hardness at 383 ppm, and chloramine disinfection that standard filters don’t fully address are real factors, not theoretical ones. For families with young children, pregnant women, or anyone who wants more than the legal minimum, a professionally installed filtration or reverse osmosis system is a practical and reasonable step.
