Want to Know About the Backflow and RPZ Valve?

Backflow Testing – What is it?

We need to start by first understanding "what is backflow testing"...

Backflow testing monitors and tests your water pressure for health and safety of water in your water pipes and in-turn your plumbing system. The main purpose and function of a backflow prevention device is to keep dirty water from pools, ponds as well as ensure that only clean, potable water is flowing through your plumbing at home or business. The backflow testing process is usually a quick and simple process taking a plumber about half an hour.

Seaway Plumbing provides back-flow testing for homes and businesses throughout Miami and the Florida Keys. The Seaway plumbing technician will follow all the backflow testing requirements and follow all the required backflow testing procedures

If you are a business requiring Annual Backflow Testing & Certification, Seaway Plumbing can provide the needed backflow testing certification.

What is an RPZ Valve?

The RPZ Valve is a unit connected in-between your water lines that is basically two independent valves with a chamber in between. Its purpose is to monitor water pressure. The valve is designed to maintain constant flow of water even if the pressure fluctuates and there is a drop in pressure. By maintaining the pressure, it does not allow for cross-contamination of water to occur by not allowing a back-flow of contaminated water to reach your clean water supply.

Think of a power strip that has a surge protector and load balance in it. The RPZ valve performs the same operation for water in the lines by keeping a constant flow at a set pressure flowing through your water lines.

What is difference between RPZ and Backflow Preventer?

The main difference between a backflow preventer like a double check valve and a reduced pressure zone (RPZ) backflow preventer. RPZ backflow preventers works similar to a double check valve device. The RPZ valve also has an intermediate relief valve that opens if and when both check valves fail.

A Seaway plumber can install a backflow preventer in homes and businesses in a strategic point of their water connection to prevent backflow and monitor.

How often do you test backflow prevention?

Annual backflow testing is required by law for businesses. The Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) device assembly needs to be tested annually and rebuilt every 5 years. A Double Check Valve (DCV) assembly needs to be tested every 3 years.

Seaway Plumbing provides back-flow testing for homes and businesses throughout Miami and the Florida Keys. The Seaway plumbing technician will follow all the backflow testing requirements and follow all the required backflow testing procedures.

Why is backflow testing important?

By now everyone has heard about contaminated water on the news. So if you are like most people you understand what contamination is and what it can do. Backflow testing is important, because cross-connections of clean water and contaminated water occurs when safe drinking water mixes with other unknown contaminants that can be harmful to health.

Does a sprinkler system need a backflow preventer?

You should install a Backflow Preventer in your sprinkler system. Most people do not realize, an irrigation system is important to keep your lawn green and healthy, but if they get backflow it can result in contaminated water. When this occurs you can get contaminated water into the home's supply of clean drinking water. If you have a sprinkler system or other water delivery system, a backflow preventer is always a good idea.
